HOW HUMANS LEARN
There are questions humans are unable to ask at certain stages during their personal evolution or growth. For example, no one has ever had a baby starting to talk at birth.
There are questions humans must ask in order to understand differing world views about reality that require both certain questions to be asked as well as the ability to comprehend answers to those questions. For example, how can someone ask a question about an aspect of reality if s/he has no comprehension of the existence of that aspect of reality in his or her current reality?
To further clarify how humans learn, how can or could a human correspond with another human prior to some common form of a language that symbolized the data desired to be communicated? For example, every culture must have a language to describe a culture. Try describing anything without a verbal, written or body language.
Prior to asking and answering these basic questions humans for centuries have been forming separate cultures with different religions and social rules and regulations. A culture’s language made this possible without any reason for a human to ask four major questions.
1. How and why does a human’s reality relate to the language s/he uses to describe that reality? 2. Is language culturally conditioning? 3. How and why does a human’s language verify his or her reality? 4. Is language the actual person, place or thing it is describing?
There is a basic reason for how and why these questions have not been asked for the countless centuries while humans have been forming their differing cultures. The basic reason is it has taken the last few centuries for science to get around to researching the nature of a human being.
This is because cultures have formed their secular and sacred rules and regulations from the top down. The rulers executed their authority to make the rules and regulations to be followed if one desired to live in that culture.
This system of authority rule acceptance has and continues to be based on the false assumption that a human “learns” via his or her five senses. Until science began to research the behavior of a human being, with the help of psychology in the twentieth century, humans only had data that were based on philosophical differences.
Philosophies, like religions, are not open to research and testing because the secular rules and regulations forbid such research and testing. It has taken all these countless centuries for humans to have a culture that allowed such research and testing.
It is this research and testing of differing philosophies that psychology introduced in the early twentieth century in countries that allowed such research. Even in the countries that allowed such research the majority of the population of that culture would find it difficult to question the rules and regulations that were currently required.
This cultural habit ruled the majority of a culture until late in the twentieth century when Humanistic Psychology and Transpersonal Psychology became a science. These two “schools” built their research on the prevailing Behavioristic Psychology.
For the first time in history the cosmology of a philosophy had a method to test its theory in real life. This became the first time the necessary language was created to communicate the discoveries of this research.
It is this research that opened the doorway for metaphysical teachings to be researched as a science that previously had always been considered philosophies.
The awesome genius of Dr. Ernest Holmes, along with his brother, Dr. Fenwicke Holmes, began this research in the early twentieth century and this research later became known as “The Science of Mind” or “Religious Science”.
In the late twentieth century Dr. Ernest Holmes passed his Science of Mind research to James Pottenger, challenging him to continue his “Universal Mind” research by updating his findings with the modern findings of science and religion. Accepting this challenge, James Pottenger created an organization which he named “The Community Church of Religious Science”.
Pottenger’s organization is fulfilling the two requests of the Holmes brothers.
1. An organization that allows and justifies differing philosophies oriented to discovering one’s spiritual nature. 2. An organization incorporating a research team that continues to synthesize differing philosophies with science.
HP/SOS is a result of the first request and justifies every philosophical system on planet Earth that is attempting to awaken its membership to their spiritual nature. This justifies Dr. Holmes’ early attempt to be an Institute of Eastern and Western philosophies.
HP/SOS is also a result of that second request discovering that the same principles apply to secular and sacred teachings when researching the evolutionary processes of a human being. The HP stands for Holographic Psychology and the SOS stands for Science of Spirit.
They both use the same principles but sound like two systems only because humans “think in” and have personal biases when using first reality’s secular or sacred language of person, place or thing.
With the different schools of psychology studying human behavior, humans finally have science dealing with the physical, mental and spiritual nature of a human being that can be tested.
Science and religion both address important questions about the world and our place in it. Both arise in part from curiosity and awe about the world. Science is based primarily on evidence, not authority or revelation. In science, nothing is taken on faith, while in religion, faith is at the heart of belief. In science, all knowledge is tentative, continually subject to revision when evidence and better explanations are acquired (aggressively sought); in contrast, religion historically asserts the presence of unchanging and unchallengeable eternal truths.
Science proposes explanations about the natural world and then puts those hypotheses to repeated tests using experiments, observations, and a creative diverse array of other methods and strategies. Traditional religions discourage skepticism or critical examination of cherished percepts.
This is why both the Science of Mind and the Science of Spirit (Holographic Psychology) are sciences, as well as research investigating the spiritual or psychic nature (transcendent) of a human being (where the testing and the conscious experiencing of the perennial philosophies of the world is now possible).
Giordano Bruno (1548-1600), a Dominican monk, was burned at the stake for his gnosis discovery regarding idealistic monism. For Bruno, God and the universe were two names for one and the same reality. The Real or God is The Whole (pre-existing wholeness), the one transcendent infinite Source of creation.
Dr. Ernest Holmes’ (1887-1960) teachings exploded on the American scene because he exposed a Spiritual Synthesis that rocked the world. Dr. Holmes was a mystic who successfully established a school of his teachings in Los Angeles, California. His discovery of idealistic monism (gnosis) has facilitated a teaching (Science of Mind) that has helped transform a vast number of lives.
Dr. Holmes accepted the archetypal patterns of Plato (428-348 B.C.) and the teleological monism of Aristotle (384-322 B.C.) as a valid cosmology. He then established that human creation should be viewed from an evolutionary basis that can be tested like any other science.
Christianity took those same archetypal patterns discovered by Plato and made them The God and The Only Creator (monotheism) of the “created” universe. This is why many people today still declare themselves to be against evolution and thus are known as “creationists”. These people are often anti science.
Dr. Holmes then took the unconscious mind concept of Dr. Freud (1856-1939) and declared it to be the two aspects of God, the Transcendent Spiritual Source of unlimited potential as the Universal Mind and the immanent individual mind as one’s self-consciousness that utilizes the same Universal Mind.
Dr. Carl Jung (1875-1961) took the unconscious mind concept of Freud and declared it to be the two aspects of a human being, the transcendent he named the “collective unconscious” with a human “self” as an immanent aspect that is capable of relating to both his or her individual consciousness and to the collective unconsciousness.
Dr. Holmes then took Jung’s discovery of the individual conscious awareness and linked the self to being both a responsible and an empowered person that is capable of discovering that his or her nature is the same nature (a Transcendent infinite inner) that monotheism religions (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam) in their subject/object language model are still worshipping as a separate God.
In Jolande Jacobi’s excellent book on The Psychology of C G Jung, she states this important step clearly on page 127:
“The archetypal image which leads from this polarity (the belief in dualism of a separation between one’s conscious and unconscious mind) to a union of the two psychic systemsconsciousness and the unconsciousthrough a midpoint common to both is the SELF. It is the last station on the path of individuation, which Jung also calls self-realization. Only when this midpoint is found and integrated, can one speak of a well-rounded person. For only then has he or she solved the problem of his or her relation to the two realms which make up every person’s life, the outward and the inner reality. Both ethically and intellectually, this is an extremely difficult task, which can be successfully performed only by the fortunate few, those elected by grace. For the conscious personality the birth of the self means a shift of its psychic center, and consequently an entirely different attitude toward, and view of lifein other words a ‘transformation’ in the fullest sense of the word.”
Dr. Ernest Holmes showed us by example that he had made the shift Dr. Jacobi was describing in her book. That Universal Mind (the collective unconscious of Jung) and an individual’s mind are one and the same mind. Dr. Holmes explained to us why thinking and feeling “create” wise or unwise results in one’s current life experience because of the power this use demonstrates either consciously or unconsciously.
In his text book, The Science of Mind, Dr. Holmes states this awesome discovery of a human’s use of the “One Mind” on page 93:
“What is termed Subjective Mind, as the average person comprehends it, has no existence. In reality, there is no such thing as your subjective mind and my subjective mind. If our subjective minds were isolated and things of themselves, we would be so completely separated that there would be no means by which we could communicate with each other. The next great bridge that psychology must cross is a recognition that what is called your subjective mind and my subjective mind is merely the place where Universal Subjectivity, The Creative Medium Itself reacts to our personal use of it. Within us, then, is a creative field which we call subjective mind, and around us there is a field which we call Universal Subjectivity. One is Universal, the other is individual, but in reality they are one. There is One mental law in the Universe and where we use It, it is impossible to plumb the depths of the individual mind, because it is not really individual but individualized. Behind or within the individualized point (of our use) is the Universal which has no limits. In this concept alone lies the possibility of an endless and an eternal expansion (actualization). Everyone is Universal on the subjective side of life and individual only at the point of conscious perception. We use the power of the Universal Mind every time we think (and feel)!”
On page 28 of Dr. Holmes’ textbook he mentions the same words that Bruno had stated: “There Are Not Two Minds, Only Two Names” Dr. Holmes, the man, his writings, his behavior, his life and his work continue to be AWESOME DISCOVERIES!
It is this mystical experience of a human’s use of Universal Mind that Holographic Psychology/Science of Spirit is researching by clarifying the behavioral changes that are produced as a human awakens to his or her transcendent nature (See the levels graphic below).

We are capable of examining this research in the twenty-first century because of our current ability to better understand how humans learn and formulate belief-systems and language models to communicate that learning. With modern research into the psychic nature of human beings (with the inclusion of the multiple psychological schools), research has discovered the missing link of self-image psychology which now explains a third way of knowing what historically has been known as “gnosis”.
The gnosis experience has been reported by a few individuals throughout history, (often as a mystical experience), however, it was not wise to discuss publicly or to even name such transcendental experiences openly to one’s general population. For example, Bruno and countless numbers that shared their experience publicly have had their disclosures cost them their lives.
Most humans have historically assumed that we only have five senses, i.e., taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing. After discovering a psychologically identifiable feeling sense, that creates, one’s life changes (will be known as one’s self-image or self-esteem). This is a paradigm shift into a new and different reality that Science of Spirit or Holographic Psychology exposes as LOC (location of comprehension) or locating how we see or perceive (See the “Sam” graphic below).
Of primary importance in the study of any and all ideas is the role of the observerYOU and I perceiving the observed. Unless and until we have determined the means by which we comprehend reality, of whatever sort, there is the risk that we will continually mistake what we see as an authentic, genuine reality, rather than what it actually is: a collection of assumptions (metaphors) we ourselves verify using our currently held belief-system. If we alone verify reality, how can we be sure it is “in fact” the reality we assume it is?
This graphic is for an individual that is awakening to what we have named The Location of Comprehension (LOC). Until we realize the implications of this graphic we are unaware of the most important aspect of consciousness. Who and What it is that we are actually observing. In other words, what makes up our current reality?
Understanding this graphic allows countless problematical areas to be explained. We never see the outside world directly because what we actually observe is the result of a process of evaluation that is given its meaning and feeling as a result of our self-image (current biases, prejudices, subjective opinions, and countless other influences that color and determine our current self-image).
After an individual is capable of locating where and how s/he understands his/her reality, s/he is empowered for the first time to be a decision-maker as to how and what response s/he will give to his/her current experiences (s/he is now aware that it is his/her own habits s/he is experiencing and not his/her past or an outside world). This is the beginning of a second reality level of awareness where choosing or free will is rational. As long as habits rule one’s behavior there is no choice because there is no “self” that is responsible or empowered over one’s reactions when believing that one is reacting to an outside world of person, place or thing.
Until LOC of second reality is comprehended, a human is not capable of being aware that his/her belief-system controls his/her language model that is describing his/her reality and producing his/her behavior.
It is this reflective capability of one’s current self-image (second reality’s LOC) which will promote the awesome discoveries that will be taking place as a human utilizes his/her connection with the transcendent as his or her “normal” expression.
It is only after LOC that a human is capable of being consciously aware that it is his/her current conditioning determining his/her current self-image.
One of the best definitions of a person’s self-image is stated by Dr. Maxwell Maltz in his famous book, Psycho-Cybernetics.
He states on page 2:
“The most important psychologic discovery of this century is the discovery of the ‘self-image’. Whether we realize it or not, each of us carries about with us a mental blueprint or picture of ourselves. It may be vague and ill-defined to our conscious gaze. In fact, it may not be consciously recognizable at all. But it is there, complete down to the last detail. This self image is our own conception of the ‘sort of person I am’. It has been built up from our own beliefs about ourselves. But most of these beliefs about ourselves have unconsciously been formed from our past experiences, our successes and failures, our humiliations, our triumphs, and the way other people have reacted to us, especially in early childhood. From all these we mentally construct a ‘self’, (or a picture of a self). Once an idea or belief about ourselves goes into this picture it becomes ‘true’, as far as we personally are concerned. We do not question its validity, but proceed to act upon it just as if it were true. … All your actions, feelings, behavioreven your abilitiesare always consistent with this self-image. In short, you will ‘act like’ the sort of person you conceive yourself to be. Not only this, but you literally cannot act otherwise, in spite of all your conscious efforts or will power. The person who conceives himself to be a ‘failure type person’ will find some way to fail, in spite of all his good intentions, or his will power, even if opportunity is literally dumped in his lap. The person who conceives himself to be a victim of injustice, one ‘who was meant to suffer’ will invariably find circumstances to verify his opinions. The self-image is a ‘premise’, a base, a foundation upon which your entire personality, your behavior, and even your circumstances are built. Because of this our experiences seem to verify, and thereby strengthen our self-image and a vicious or beneficent cycle, as the case may be, is set up.” With this added sense of self-image we can now explain the three methods of how human beings have always comprehended reality and how these three methods are justifying the level of understanding the human is utilizing in order to live that reality.
Reason
According to this learning approach to truthif attainable at alltruth can only be discovered by making use of the human rational faculties in combination with the evidence of the senses. In principle, all knowledge is based on reason that is accessible to all human beings. The findings of reason can be expressed in discursive language, which makes mutual communication and discussion possible.
Reason is assumed to be the coherent form of drawing inferences. Reasoning is the processing from given data or premises to legitimate conclusions. It is assuming “right” relations (by one’s current definitions) between ideas. It is assuming conclusions from one’s currently accepted facts.
All of these assumptions are open to validation in a science that deals with an outside world of things and places, i.e., the physical sciences. These assumptions have produced an awesome technology, however, in human relations these same assumptions have continued to produce war, struggle and suffering.
Why reason can work so well for the physical sciences and fail so miserably for the mental or spiritual sciences is because of the private nature of human understanding determining mental and spiritual comprehension.
Prior to the science of psychology, humans accepted other peoples’ opinions about the nature of human beings, which has given us a vast number of philosophies and theologies with no capability or inclination to test any one of them.
Laws of society were established by the rulers (secular and sacred) because this served the rulers in controlling a culture’s population. It was not until the sixteenth-century (and in the West the next four hundred years) that the physical sciences escaped from political and church control of what data could be opened to research.
During this time (before and after) most humans have continued to be controlled by the “laws of religions” in both the East and the West. To legitimize these controls religions have also used reason to justify their faith.
Faith
According to this approach to truthhuman reason does not in itself have the power to discover the basic truths about existence. The ultimate truth must be revealed to humans from some transcendental sphere.
This revelation can be found in traditional stories, dogmas or creeds of authoritative figures, holy scriptures, etc. The common characteristic is that one has to believe (or have faith) in the authority of these sources as an acceptable means of knowing truth. It is not difficult to see why the first psychology was a physical science based on controlled behavior using pigeons and rats. It was assumed that people were also controlled by environmental conditioning (past and present) through operant conditioning.
By early scientists only researching the world’s physical reality, they protected themselves from challenging most of their culture’s sacred laws of scripture. This attempt to avoid the non-physical worlds also became popular at the turn of the twentieth-century with a group of philosophers known as the “Vienna Circle”.
With this “new philosophy”, questions about the world that had been asked and answered for countless centuries were now language questions. This approach to reality kept philosophy acceptable to educational systems under their culture’s governmental control, i.e., universities penchant for physicalism.
This is why the cause and effect of both behavioristic and psychoanalytic psychologies were supported financially by the major universities (and still are). Both of these systems make a human’s environment the cause of one’s behavior which is still known as conditioning (past and present). Both psychological systems believe that a human’s nature is a result of his/her physical brain conditioning.
Because humans were conditioned by outside forces, this validated the dualistic philosophy of monotheism in which a God and/or the Devil continued to make humans their victims. This believed-in “empirical” orientation presupposes that all learning is from outside sources, i.e., authorities, books, teachers, parents, etc.
I trust that by this time you are wondering about philosophies like the perennial philosophies. Haven’t they been around in small populations for many centuries in every major culture? Yes, yes, yes, and now, beginning in the twenty-first century, we discover how populations historically had experienced a knowledge that was learned intuitively, not externally (empirically). It was and still is known as gnosis.
Gnosis
According to this approach to truthtranscendental experience can only be found by personal, inner revelation, intuition, insight or enlightenment. Truth can only be personally experienced: in contrast with the knowledge based on reason or faith, gnosis is not generally accessible. This "inner knowing" cannot be transmitted by discursive language (this would reduce it to rational knowledge or reason). Nor can it be the subject of faith (in the above sense of revelation through some external authority) because gnosis is personal, inner experience and is not knowable from authorities. It is gnosis that justifies learning from inner acceptances, rather than outer causes.
This is a validation of Plato’s original idea of “remembering” (archetypes) as a human’s source of knowledge, also acknowledged by Dr. Holmes’s explanation of Universal Mind as a human’s source of knowledge. It is research into the nature of gnosis that Dr. Ernest Holmes named “Science of Mind”. Using a philosophy of panentheism and a psychology of operant conditioning he created a Science of Mind that is testable as a theology. His discovery of a human’s awesome potential was presented over thirty years earlier than that of Dr. Maslow’s group which founded Humanistic Psychology. It was forty years before Transpersonal Psychology was formed as a science to investigate the paranormal.
SCIENCE OF SPIRIT OR HOLOGRAPHIC PSYCHOLOGY
It is the current research into the Science of Spirit or Holographic Psychology that is validating Dr. Holmes’s research of the Science of Mind. It is providing the basis for the next level or stage a human is capable of understanding and expressing. What it takes for this research to go beyond being just another philosophy is the earlier mentioned self-image psychology which, as a science, requires a paradigm shift into a second reality of awareness of awareness (see “Sam” graphic on page 6).
Dr. Carl Jung led the way in research in which a human discovers the importance of a self or individuation as a stage or level of understanding. Holographic Psychology or Science of Spirit names this important stage second reality because prior to this paradigm shift humans have been stuck for centuries in the name game of a first reality based on the five senses producing the dualistic cosmologies of that reality.
It is in first reality where behavioristic and psychoanalytic psychology fit a human’s belief-system, i.e., a body with a conditioned brain. Like the Pavlov dog that salivates when the bell is rung to feed her, humans in first reality have lived a “knee jerk” reality (cosmology) in which reactions to their past or present environment is never questioned. The language model used is based on subject/object definitions.
Behavioristic psychology and psychoanalysis both fit first reality where the blame game produces the same results whether one is blaming his or her environment or his or her past for his or her conditioned reactions. It takes a second reality’s birth of a “self”, “ego”, “person”, “I”, (awareness of awareness) before reflection of one’s own conditioning is possible.
It is this reflection capability of the science of self-image psychology that makes the process of Dr. Ernest Holmes’s Science of Mind demonstration capable because of a process language model use that is actualizing within one’s Universal Mind.
This is a total reversal of first reality’s cause and effect model of victimization.
Instead of a person playing victim to his or her external reality (s/he is now aware that his or her reactions are based on his or her own conditioning that is within his or her brain). It is now possible for the self, I, or person to be the cause that produces the effect. This was the awesome discovery of Dr. Holmes’s Science of Mind methodology when implementing treatments as a form of acceptance (feeling as if). We are now potentially capable of recognizing the multiple levels of understanding experienced by humans (see Holographic Psychology graphic of levels of understanding on page 11). This is why so many self-help systems attempt to teach one to be the creator of his/her world instead of being a victim (I create my world). It is this shift into the Science of Mind or second reality that justifies stating that one is responsible for one’s own conditioning. S/he now decides to continue to practice his/her current conditioning or s/he is ready to be empowered by practicing change. For example, I am rich or poor, I am sick or well, I am happy or sad, I am wise or foolish, etc. (first reality’s pair of opposites that are acceptances or beliefs, never the person).
The reason this revelation requires a paradigm shift is: as long as one is only a conditioned brain of first reality, there is no person or self to test the hypothesis of a second reality. It is this discovery that makes what has always been a philosophy of a person’s mind now capable of also being a science of a person’s mind.
Another awesome aspect of Dr. Ernest Holmes’ Science of Mind (that requires another paradigm shift) into a new and exciting world view is his panentheism base of Science of Mind in which he establishes the awesome potential of Universal Mind as the SOURCE of a human’s individual mind. This also helps us understand why worry and pain can be so devastating when a human practices ignorance of identity. We can use this SOURCE wisely or unwisely.
Dr. Holmes named this potential that he discovered within himself, “Universal Mind” or “Presence”, which prior to awakening we believe to be our “individual mind”. The mind is not the brain, the mind is the transcendent aspect of a human’s nature that acts as “software” of the brain’s operations acting as “hardware”.
When we consider what can be done to prepare a way to awaken this creative aspect of our nature, we realize that it is not only a new method of thought that is needed but a new and special identity of a person. This new quality requires a reality that is not limited to the naming of one’s world of person, place or thing, but having a capacity (or vision) that is capable of perceiving reality in a multiplicity of dimensions. This new comprehension requires using a process language model when describing the psychic dynamics within one’s transcendent nature.
This is not merely an intellectual ability, it also involves participation in varied dimensions of gnosis (a feeling experience) that transcends individual limitations.
The ability of a human to be sensitive to his/her inward psychic world has been unexplored by most modern scientists because, for centuries, this important area (the human psyche) was given to religions and philosophers to define human nature.
It was not until the twentieth-century that giants like Dr. Jung and Dr. Holmes developed systems requiring exploration into this awesome area of discovery of the psyche (immanent and transcendent) that we are now able to pursue.
Science of Mind has opened the psyche to the examination of:
1. Current conditioning and the behavior it produces. 2. Options or choices to change current conditioning. 3. Methods to practice the desired changes. 4. An unlimited potential awaiting actualization.
Number one: requires reflection capability by a person (I, or ego) that s/he has accepted habits or beliefs needing to be changed. Number two: requires a vision in which his/her imagination starts dreaming of meaningful replacements of current acceptances. Number three: requires methods in which s/he starts practicing (feeling as if) the potential replacements as acceptance, which can be any number of self-help systems. Number four: requires an identity change from an individual mind to a universal mind as his/her actual nature.
It is the practicing of these hypotheses (philosophies) that make Science of Mind a science. All four of the above theories require testing in order to witness proof. All four of these require the paradigm shift into at least a second reality of one’s psychic nature where a newly discovered self can operate such a testing program.
It is this testing of Science of Mind, which is the practicing of change, that naturally opens the doorway to the Science of Spirit. A human being must first be operating in what s/he will believe is his or her own personal psyche before the discovery of its transcendent nature of Universal Mind.
After or during this process of discovery s/he will start having exciting new experiences of gnosis or cosmic consciousness. This opens the doorway to the Science of Spirit.
Science of Spirit or Holographic Psychology is a science for an individual that has opened to his or her psyche area by practicing Science of Mind actualization.
Science of Spirit has opened the psyche to research and the examination of:
1. How beliefs form mental systems of understanding (belief-systems) that humans use when forming their realities into language models. 2. How beliefs can be either intellectual (reasoned reality) or gnosis experiential (actual reality being demonstrated as a self-image) when comprehending reality. 3. Research taking place into left hemisphere connection to intellectual meaning and decision-making capability and right hemisphere connection to the creative feeling of acceptance of pre-existing potential of universal mind. 4. Research into the transcendent connection with the universal.
Number one: requires comprehension of one’s own belief-system as one’s current conditioning that is producing one’s current behavior (second reality’s LOC). Number two: requires comprehension of left hemisphere decision-making ability of responsibility and empowerment (reasoning) and right hemisphere connection of universal mind as unlimited potential (gnosis) awaiting actualization as a result of acceptance. A process language model is added to the subject/object language model. Number three: requires comprehension of self-image psychology of a Universal SELF, in which one is intellectually as well as experientially dealing with an actualizing acceptance as being natural to one’s existence. Holographic Psychology teachers use CDs to help reprogram current beliefs that are being replaced with more desirable beliefs. Number four: is the paradigm shift that motivates life to live as a totally new human being based on a reality of an awakening cosmology of unlimited creativity.
Throughout history, most gnosis experiences that humans have labeled as “oneness” or “cosmic consciousness” have been described, after the experience, in a subject/object language model of first reality.
This often produces a negative theology because the dualistic subject/object language model of first reality proclaims that at no point does a human have direct access to God. In first reality, whatever can be experienced is not transcendent beyond the individual. All experience in first reality is reduced to one’s brain.
Dr. Martin Buber has given us an excellent example of this first reality belief-system demonstrating that unitive experiences can only occur within the human being, and the reality of those experiences is a human one and not a God experience.
On page 24, in his book, Between Man And Man, Dr. Buber states this position clearly:
“From my own unforgettable experience I know well that there is a state in which the bonds of the personal nature of life seem to have fallen away from us and we experience an undivided unity. But I do not knowwhat the soul willingly imagines and indeed is bound to imagine (mine too once did it)that in this I had attained to a union with the primal being or the godhead. That is an exaggeration no longer permitted to the responsible understanding. Responsiblythat is, as a man holding his ground before realityI can elicit from those experiences only that in them I reached an undifferentiable unity of myself without form or content. I may call this an original prebiographical unity and suppose that it is hidden unchanged beneath all biographical change, all development of the soul. . . existing but once, single, unique, irreducible, this creaturely one: one of the human souls and not the soul of the All; a defined and particular being and not ‘Being’; the creaturely basic unity of a creature."
Dr. Buber is saying that an experience of unity may have access to a ground of being, however, it is a human’s personal being and not the Being of God.
This is why Science of Mind and Science of Spirit (Holographic Psychology) provide a bridge for humans that are asking and are capable of understanding a number of questions that deal with the evolution of a human being explaining how and in what way an individual mind can be simultaneously a Universal Mind.
Some of the most important questions are:
1. Where is a person’s potential prior to its actualization? 2. What motivates the actualization of a potential? 3. Is the knowledge given to him or her by his or her mentors the only knowledge s/he will ever know? 4. What motivates a person to challenge one’s current knowledge (beliefs)? 5. What enables a person to understand different knowledge or beliefs if his/her current knowledge or beliefs do not agree with the new or different data? 6. Do thoughts cause things or are thoughts symbols of things? 7. How can pre-existing potential be caused if potential pre-exists? 8. If universal mind or wholeness pre-exists, then is it not acceptance and not cause that would bring that wholeness into a person’s life? 9. How can a Universal Mind be simultaneously an individual’s mind? 10. Isn’t locating Universal Mind within an individual named “solipsism”? 11. How is a person capable of exploring his or her transcendent nature if his or her attention is still on changing others, rather than, a new orientation of an unlimited SELF awakening to an unlimited creativity of LOVE and LAW?
These are a few of the questions that require the Science of Spirit to be added to Dr. Holmes’s Science of Mind. With the acceptance of a person’s Source being both Universal Mind and individual mind simultaneously, questions can now be asked and answered that the reason and faith belief authorities of first reality are still fighting over as philosophies or theologies with no way to test their conclusions.
Thanks to giants like Dr. Holmes and Dr. Jung, we have in the twenty-first century tools that help us utilize the two newly discovered hemispheres of our brain as hardware and the comprehension tools of our Universal Mind (Science of Mind and Science of Spirit) as software to explore the nature of gnosis as our transcendent aspect or GROUND OF BEING.
This is an important place to show why Dr. Holmes established the “map” or “path” for Western oriented searchers of their Transcendent Nature. By establishing his Science of Mind on cause and effect, Dr. Holmes set up a scientific method of two steps of discovery in a human’s evolutionary process which Science of Spirit (Holographic Psychology) names “Spiritual DNA” as the motivating pattern of human evolutionary stages.
1.In order to practice or cause change one needs to reflect upon one’s current conditioning (in whatever area) before one would be consciously aware of what one desires to change. Reflective awareness of what is currently being practiced. 2.In order to “feel as if” change is already accepted as the way in which one practices the “treatments” of Science of Mind, one is actually practicing Universal Mind’s inclusion of the desired change. Acceptance by degree is the actualization of pre-existing potential acceptance.
These two steps develop left hemisphere decision-making and right hemisphere entry into the Transcendent Aspect of Universal Mind awaiting actualization through acceptance.
It is the practice of these two steps that can bring great confusion if a searcher is simultaneously studying an Eastern Teaching that is telling him or her to do away with the self, ego or I, as well as to do away with desire. Holographic Psychology names this suggested practice, “ego bashing” or “Beta brain wave bashing”. Second reality is normally the self still believing that s/he is a separate individual.
Ego bashing is ignorance of the importance of the part a human’s level of awareness plays in both decision-making and participation in the acceptance of change. This is why paradigm shifts produce identity changes from a first and second reality of dualism to a third reality of monism. The “I AM” of first and second reality is a separate finite individual. The “I AM” of third reality is the oneness of Universal Mind.
It is desire that motivates the evolutionary process. It is the self, ego or I that channels the awesome creativity of the infinite (Universal Mind) into the world as technology, etc. It is desire that motivates a self to practice the cause and effect of Science of Mind in order to realize wholeness in every area of one’s life.
It is desire that motivates a self to explore the Transcendent Nature of a human being. Science of Mind directs our path to practice wholeness and Science of Spirit directs us to awaken to a world of “light people” who no longer live in struggle and ignorance.
It is in the next step or “third reality” that Science of Spirit explains why a human drops cause of second reality’s cause and effect because after one has consciously evolved into the Transcendent Aspect of third reality, cause changes to acceptance of what in second reality was still considered potential to be realized by a separate self.
This is why gnosis is learned in second reality’s Science of Mind as one’s psychological self-image when the self is still believed to be separate. This is also why humans are required to learn responsibility and empowerment before it makes sense to switch to acceptance eliminating the process of becoming.
One last important point. If a teaching is attempting to destroy one’s self, ego or I, what is actually happening is a practice that is attempting to turn off one’s left hemisphere. If successful, one can find peace in a void without thought, however, one can also find schizophrenia. This is why the separate I of second reality has “free will” to choose a life that is only limited by the scope of one’s imagination. Second reality is where one learns responsibility and empowerment with the fun of being creative. Second reality is the basis of most self-help system, both sacred and secular.
Without our analyzing, decision-making left brain hemisphere, meditation and/or practicing non-participation systems, like mindfulness, can open the “garbage can” of the psychic world which could be dangerous. Science of Spirit (Holographic Psychology) is a philosophical model (cosmology) that demonstrates with psychological methods that validate, through science that is testable, birthing a new human being (ontology).
We can now take Dr. Holmes’s Universal Mind and Dr. Jung’s collective unconscious as the SOURCE of all creation with levels of understanding evolving as an involution creating an evolution. When a human being attempts to skip the importance of the science of one’s individual mind stage “ego” maniacs, like a Hitler or a self serving guru, can result when talking universal source from an individual’s ontology.
AWESOME!
For people interested in this research we have three websites. Our first website is: www.simplyjoy.com and our first book is Life Changing Explosion of Consciousness, Introduction to Holographic Psychology which is written by Dr. Margrit Spear.
Our second website is www.thescienceofspirit.com. A textbook written by Dr. Pottenger. It is made available via this website by our Director of Global Communications, Dr. Paul Lloyd Warner.
Our third website is www.soulmanlarry.com. A book is available, Celestial Fire, a Naval Aviator’s Spiritual Odyssey written by our Director of Education Larry James Stevens.
We are just beginning to grasp the enormity of potential to be discovered within human beings. Thanks to people like Dr. Holmes we now have researchers like you exploring our nature and the organizations his work has helped developed.
We all have fantastic reasons to be very excited about our future.
Dr. Fenwicke Holmes was co-author with his brother Dr. Ernest Holmes of The Voice Celestial. This book is about Universal Mind’s conscious awareness showing a process of how awakening takes place in a human individual’s conscious awareness.
Dr. Fenwicke Holmes has a poem written that beautifully describes this awakening human.
IN YOU
Behold the secret now unfurled, in you alone exists the world: No single tint of color lies beyond the magic of your eyes. There is no music others may hear outside the marvel of your ears; No sound disturbs the ambient air unless an ear is listening there. The happiness you seek must lie within your heart as you pass by. And none may give and none withhold, for joy is neither young nor old. There is no love for you to find beyond the circle of your mind: He only plays the lover’s role who first finds love within their soul. Think not of self as mean or small in you is comprehended All: All of the world is compassed by the light within the inner eye. In you God sees, in you God hears, in you the marvel of the spheres; You are God’s purpose, you are God’s dream; be not deceived by things that seem. Through you God breathes the living breath that knoweth not decay nor death.
Who seeks a better world to find must know it lies within their mind. Then go not thou in search of peace but in yourself give it release. Think not to save the world, but be the kind of heaven man may see. And seeing heaven in your eyes, He will reflect your Paradise.
He who reveals the God within alone can save the world from sin. Turn from the fevered search for pelf and find the wealth within yourself. If you would point a better way to tortured souls and sheep that stray Then go the way you point and know men follow only where you go.
Not what you say but what you ARE becomes to man his guiding star. Look to yourself if you would find the secret of the Cosmic Mind: Look to yourself, believe that you can bring God's purpose into view. Hid in this precious alabaster is found the secret of the Master. The world has waited long to see the God that you alone can be.
What We Believe was written by Dr. Ernest Holmes and was published in the first issue of Science of Mind magazine, October 1927 (gender edited).
What We Believe
We believe in God, the Living Spirit Almighty; one, indestructible, absolute, and self existent Cause. This One manifests itself in and through all creation but is not absorbed by its creation. The manifest universe is the body of God; it is the logical and necessary outcome of the infinite self knowingness of God. We believe in the incarnation of the Spirit in everyone and that all people are incarnations of the One Spirit. We believe in the eternality, the immortality, and the continuity of the individual soul, forever and ever expanding. We believe that Heaven is within us and that we experience it to the degree that we become conscious of it. We believe the ultimate goal of life to be a complete emancipation from all discord of every nature, and that this goal is sure to be attained by all. We believe in the unity of all life, and that the highest God and the innermost God is one God. We believe that God is personal to all who feel this Indwelling Presence. We believe in the direct revelation of Truth through the intuitive and spiritual nature of the individual, and that any person who lives in close contact with the indwelling God may become a revealer of Truth. We believe that the Universal Spirit, which is God, operates through a Universal Mind, which is the Law of God; and that we are surrounded by this Creative Mind, which receives the direct impress of our thought and acts upon it. We believe in the healing of the sick through the power of this Mind. We believe in the control of conditions through the power of this Mind. We believe in the eternal Goodness, the eternal Loving kindness, and the eternal Givingness of Life to all. We believe in our own soul, our own spirit, and our own destiny; for we understand that the life of all is God.”
There are two articles on our website www.thescienceofspirit.com that can be helpful in understanding the two paradigm shifts in which a human first becomes aware that a human can know what is producing his or her behavior and secondly, a human can become aware of his or her Transcendent Aspect of Universal Mind.
1. The discovery of the SELF. 2. Self-Image Psychology Overview.
